Hold Yourself Accountable by Journaling

Posted by Tiffany Damle on January 26, 2010 at 11:04 PM

Most people would be awfully surprised to see just what goes into their mouths over the course of the day that is too quickly forgotten. Our quick lunches and 'squeeze it in here and there' breakfasts have become the norm. In addition to the mindlessness that goes into when we eat, it all too often affects how we eat .

By keeping a daily journal of what time you consume your meals as well as exactly what they consisted of, you can start to decipher your patterns. Perhaps you are always craving sugar around midday, or feeling ravenous by lunch. Looking into the days prior may reveal that you usually only have a piece of toast and a cup of coffee. By identifying problem patterns in your habits, you will be able to plan out your meals much easier, not to mention the advantages of knowing how many calories you are actually consuming ,rather than guessing!

Hold yourself accountable for your actions. If you find that you are always repeating a particular bad habit, then plan ahead to make the changes necessary to get on track. Add words of motivation to your journal or even make notes to yourself on the things that you did incorrectly the days prior.

Journaling not only helps you to become more aware of your behavior, but it can also act as a form of inspiration and motivation when you add in your workout entries. Watch how quickly those workouts accumulate day by day and see how your progress has come along just the same. Maybe you see that on January 1st, you ran 3 miles at 30 minutes, which by the time February arrived, your time was already down to 28 minutes. Seeing how far you've come is a great window into how far you can go!

Tiff, this is still really working well for me. I have slowed down a little bit now that I feel that I'm back in control. But, I like to look back through it and see my progress and see how bad I was doing before I started. Definitley a good tool.
